Good Games is happy to reveal our cute little spoiler for Magic: the Gathering Bloomburrow, Hazardroot Herbalist! As the set releases on 2 August, this little spoiler gives us a peek on what to expect in Magic: the Gathering’s latest set. Thank you to Wizards of the Coast for this exclusive spoiler card! First off let’s take a look at the card. Hazardroot Herbalist is a 1/4 uncommon Rabbit Druid that says:

Hazardroot Herbalist (Cost: 2G) "Whenever you attack, target creature you control gets +1/+0 until end of turn. If that creature is a token, it also gains deathtouch until end of turn.”

Off the bat, the card’s already a strong uncommon that can pump up a creature whenever you attack. The added bit of deathtouch makes it even sweeter for token based strategies, which is looking to be in line with the theme of Bloomburrow.

We could already tell from the set’s art that Bloomburrow would be about little things making a big impact. Mabel and her signature weapon Cragflame already showed us that little critters don’t stay little for long, with cards synergising together to wipe out big targets (mainly an opponent’s life total).

We also see this in Bria, Riptide Rogue, who can be found in the starter decks. Not only does it have prowess (a devastating ability in any red/blue deck) but it gives other creatures prowess and unblockable as well. Mix it up with cards like Stormcatch Mentor, and your little Otters are off and running!

So although a card like Bria is strong, Bloomburrow shows us that we want our cards to work together and become a whole greater than the sum of its parts.

And of course, we’re going to see a big focus on creature types. Look forward to kindred spells and card abilities that care a lot about how many birds, otters, and any other critters you have in a zoological battle for superiority.

And who wouldn't want to fill their board state with as many critters as possible? Give me my spell-slinging otter army, please!

Going back to Hazardroot, I can see that this card would be a solid addition in Limited play. The rabbit is pretty good on its own, with 4 toughness to make it a solid blocker. However, it’s ability is what makes it a nasty creature to deal with. I’d run Hazardroot Herbalist with a token creation focused deck, (I think it’s safe to assume we’re going to see armies of rabbits, mice, and rats and so on) so I can turn a measly 1/1 into a 2/1 with deathtouch. BUT if I manage to get 4 copies in, that 1/1 becomes a 5/5 and we’re already looking at a pretty serious threat. Does your opponent block your creature and lose them to deathtouch, or let them through and take heaps of damage and possibly lose? This rabbit is truly a problem.

Psst! have you signed up for a prerelease yet? Check out which of our stores are running one near you! Just click right here! Did you know? You can get exclusive rewards for playing Bloomburrow throughout its release!

Overall, Bloomburrow is shaping up to be one of the most exciting, if not cutest, sets of the year. Not only will it have new cards that players can brew new decks with, it’s also bumping off the Innistrad block, Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, and Streets of New Capenna off the Standard rotation. These little critters are turning out to be a really big deal for all of Magic: the Gathering. What do you think about Hazardroot Herbalist and Bloomburrow?
