Description

Wingspan Pocket distils the award-winning Wingspan experience into a compact, travel-friendly card game that’s perfect for the kitchen table, the pub, or your next holiday. Designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and illustrated by Natalia Rojas and Ana Maria Martinez Jaramillo, this standalone game has you attracting stunning bird species from around the world, feeding them, and filling their nests with eggs to build a powerful engine.

Each turn you’ll activate a single row of cards, juggling food and bird cards as you chain together clever combos and ongoing powers. With 1–5 players, a playtime of around 25–35 minutes, and an accessible age rating of 8+, Wingspan Pocket is ideal for families, bird lovers, and gamers looking for a quick yet satisfying strategy game. All the charm of Wingspan, now in a sleek little box that slips easily into your bag.

Brings the best of the big game in a travel packag

"Wingspan Pocket takes the brilliant engine building of the original Wingspan and distills it into a super sleek, portable package. It keeps all that satisfying bird drafting and habitat management, but streamlines everything so you can set up and play in a fraction of the time. What really shines is the single player mode, which uses a quick, smooth Automa system that runs effortlessly with zero tedious bookkeeping. You get all the tight competition and depth of a full game in a lightning fast solo play, making it an absolute delight to bring to the table."

Wingspan

"Wingspan Pocket is an elegant compression of one of my favourite games. Across it's iterations, Wingspan gameifies the hobby of bird watching, where you observe and learn about a variety of birds from around the globe. The aim of Wingspan Pocket is to attract six birds to your "flock" while building a solid engine to stack up points to win. The game is playable for up to 5 players and has an automa/solo mode option. The bird cards feature the same fantastic art from a selection of birds from all currently available Wingspan games & expansions, plus a few new birds from Africa. Apart from the eggs, the game is entirely card-based. Elegantly, each card is double sided to display either a bird or food. This makes managing the display very satisfying as the available food is always replenished when new birds are drawn. However, the bird display can become a bit stagnant for games with fewer players when nobody wants to draw the available birds. Since the card side is set when drawn, every player by necessity has an open "hand" on the table in front of them and will play birds up to their flock, and discard or tuck food or bird cards throughout the game. I was pleasantly surprised at how well and how many of the bird powers from the original game were translated into this much simpler format. "Ongoing" (green) powers are introduced for the first time here, but the classic "when played" (brown powers) remain the best and most satisfying way to build your engine and stack up points. The bird powers are communicated primarily as symbols for ease of gameplay. Unlike in full Wingspan, bird powers in your flock are activated every turn after taking one of three actions (play a bird, draw cards, or lay eggs) which really keeps the game moving. The game end is triggered when someone plays a sixth bird to their flock. This player usually ends up winning overall but each player is allowed an equal number of turns before points are scored so the competition may be tight in some cases. I found after a few plays wishing there were more ways to spend food (which can accumulate in your hand more easily than the original game). I also missed the complexity of playing birds into the different habitats from the original game. That being said, Wingspan Pocket achieves its aim with fast & accessible gameplay - great for introducing new players to Wingspan while keeping experienced players engaged. In the best possible way, Wingspan Pocket leaves you wanting more. Either in repeat games to aim for higher scores or by igniting the desire to progress to the full game with it's staggering array of birdlife to enjoy."

Amazing game

"Easy to learn, lots of fun and fits in my handbag, great addition to my shelf and will be played lots for sure. Only thing missing is a little scorepad to keep track of our scores."
